In 1956 Guy Blackburn was born in Chicoutimi, where he continues to live and work. His practice, begun in the early 1980s, has led him to participate in many contemporary art exhibitions and events, in Quebec, Canada and abroad (France, Germany, Poland, Chile, Cuba). Since 1990, the pluridisciplinary artist has proposed a range of works that have captured the attention of a broad public, led to sustained outreach activities and been the focus of a significant analysis. Take for instance the projects “Cécité”, “Hommage à Anna”, “Espace interdit”, “Quémander l’affection” and the series of four installations at Canada's Cold War Museum in Ontario. Between 1992 and 2015, in a period spanning 23 years, Blackburn produced a body of works titled “TOC” that brings together 242 paintings under the theme of obsessive collecting.
He has also presented “Sans Silence” and “Extrait d’ambiguïté” at the Musée de Rimouski, at the Galerie Séquence in Chicoutimi as well as at the Biennale nationale de sculpture contemporaine in Trois-Rivières. His last art adventure “Touche” is a major work produced and disseminated in partnership with Centre national de recherche et diffusion en arts contemporains numériques, SAGAMIE, in Alma. The works acquired by Hôtel Chicoutimi are on permanent display on its four floors. Though Blackburn's approach can be characterized as an open practice, installation and painting continue to be at the core of his work.
